Design story
The brief was a 12 ct royal-blue Ceylon-style sapphire that reads as a faceted iris rather than a flat window. Every eye/iris design in the reference library — 30 distinct candidates — was traced at sapphire's own refractive index, not the index each design was originally written for, because a design safe in a lower-index material isn't automatically safe in corundum.
Five designs in the library were actually written for corundum's index. Dragon Eye was the best of them: a 3.1% window, 30° of tilt tolerance, and 9.47° of pavilion margin above the critical angle — cuttable exactly as specified, no re-angling required.
Lab-grown origin was a deliberate choice, not a compromise: a Czochralski-pulled boule gives the consistent Fe–Ti concentration this size of stone needs to read true royal blue instead of going inky, a property that's reliable to specify in advance precisely because it isn't mined rough.
Rough & material notes
- Uniform royal-blue tone — consistent with a homogeneous pulled boule, not natural growth banding.
- Eye-clean clarity — no silk, no geological-timescale inclusions.
- Mohs 9 hardness, specific gravity 3.97–4.05 (mid-range 3.99 used for the quoted weight).
- Quote the stone as ~12 ct, not 12.00 ct, until the rough's exact specific gravity is confirmed — the design's own geometry holds across the full SG range (11.95–12.19 ct).
